Yaelisa moved back to the United States in 1996. Her choreographies have been commissioned by several modern dance companies, including John Malashock & Company, Rose Polsky and Collage Dance Theatre. She is internationally recognized as a master teacher, and has developed a teaching style that emphasizes cultural understanding and knowledge of the cante. Her company has performed around the world. Last year Yaelisa, El Rubio, Roberto Zamora and Caminos Flamencos performed in Pacifica to a standing ovation. With their staccato feet, artful palmas (percussive handclapping), sterling vocals (Zamora) and dark, romantic, mystery strings (El Rubio), the dancers and the musicians completely embodied the power and the vulnerability that is flamenco. As for their audience, the evening remains transformative.

‘Precision Beauty’ onow showing at Moraga Art Gallery. Moraga Art Gallery hosts a show of “cabochon” jewelry by Kuniko Kay Nitta and contemporary Chinese calligraphy by Bing-Jib Huang. The show, which includes the gallery’s 15 resident artists and several guest artists, runs through Aug. 22 at the gallery in the Rheem Shopping Center, at 522 Center St., in Moraga.
