“I’ve been really inspired by Raisa’s formalism, her very conscious approach to phrasemaking,” Bailis says. “She’s got a wonderful dramatic sensibility in a classical approach to modern dance. She comes to us with a tremendous amount of craft and really interesting ideas about the moving body.”. As much a performance artist as a dance maker, Caffey is known for integrating text and dance, language and improvised movement. A member of Oakland’s Wing It! Performance Ensemble, she also has developed work through ODC’s pilot program.

Dawn L. Troupe as Mr. _____’s love Shug Avery brings gravitas and compassion to her role. Initially, she’s seen as a sexy chanteuse who performs all over the South, but when she arrives at Mr. _____’s home, she’s physically spent and Celie nurses her back to health. Eventually, Shug and Celie discover their mutual love for each other, and from there they become allies against Mr. _____. The third movement is quintessential Glass, pulsing music ushered in by low strings and picked up by the violins; Salerno-Sonnenberg’s solo playing in this movement was graceful and affecting. The finale’s dance-inspired music — rhythmic, insistent, and wonderfully bracing — brought the piece to a dramatic close. Still, the evening’s overriding mood was cheerful, and the orchestra closed it out with Heidrich’s “Happy Birthday Variations.” The work’s title says it all — beginning with the famous birthday song, Heidrich gives us 14 variations, each written in the style of a famous composer. From Bach, Haydn and Mozart, he makes a progression from Beethoven to Max Reger, and on to styles such as Viennese and Hungarian. It’s a witty little party piece, and Salerno-Sonnenberg and her players dispatched it with plenty of dash; in the quieter moments, snippets of loud music from a nearby venue added an Ivesian touch.
