In the winter of 1944, despite the Pacific War turning decisively in favor of the Allies, the Bay Area was being invaded. Quietly and without much fanfare, an army from the East established a beachhead that Christmas, and life has never been quite the same since. I’m referring of course to “The Nutcracker,” which made its North American premiere as an evening-length ballet at the War Memorial Opera House 73 years ago. The production was an immediate sensation, and Nutcrackers large and small have been marching across the country ever since.
