He wrote two memoirs, “Rewrites” (1996) and “The Play Goes On” (1999). They were combined into “Neil Simon’s Memoirs.”. Simon was married five times, twice to the same woman. His first wife, Joan Baim, died of cancer in 1973, after 20 years of marriage. They had two daughters, Ellen and Nancy, who survive him. Simon dealt with her death in “Chapter Two” (1977), telling the story of a widower who starts anew. For Wall, dance is almost his first language. His mother runs a well-regarded dance school in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and all four of his brothers have studied or danced professionally. He began training at age 3, appeared in a Broadway revival of “The Music Man” at 13 and successfully auditioned for “So You Think You Can Dance” at 18. As much as he sees himself as “goal-oriented,” he’s never danced just to become famous or rich. He sees dance as a way to tell stories about sometimes turbulent life experiences. As a young teenager, for example, he struggled for a time with how to tell people he was gay.

A I still do that. It’s a way of centering myself. Very often, to the last moment going on stage, there’s conflicting issues. Has everybody made it there on time? At the last minute, perhaps we’re missing a piece of music. There can be commotion backstage. And I’m also maybe working with soloists, trying to keep their spirits up. And that can be many different things, according to what their mood is before they play. Some are very hyper, and you need to calm them down. And some are very scared, and you need to kind of joke around with them, get them to open up.
